Strange Days (1995)

Strange Days (1995)

People around the world will take note when President Barack Obama gets the Nobel Peace Prize December 10 in Oslo, Norway.

The same day in Stockholm, 13 outstanding world citizens, including five women, receive the Nobel Prize medal, diploma and monetary prize from King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.

Most Americans know about the Nobel Peace Prize. Some of us take the time to learn about the Nobel Prizes awarded in fields such as economics and literature. But most Nobel winners toil in the darkness as the Americans.

In contrast, the winners recognized in their own country and other countries for the expertise and dedication that earned them the most prestigious academic honor of the world.

We Americans want our nation to lead in science and technology. But our government cut the subsidies it offers top scientists and universities to conduct research, discouraging the kind of risk-taking that innovation leads to breakthrough science.

As primary and special education teacher for 25 years, I have seen the effects of the ambiguous attitude of our country in the direction of mathematics, science, technology and higher education. No Child Left Behind all their pressure on schools for their students to pass rigorous math and science tests. But my husband, a Nobel laureate in physics, says his best times in two students thinking about becoming physicists, because so few financial resources for this branch of science.

Other countries, like Japan, Korea and China spend huge sums for research. Our nation is at a turning point. Will we lead or the world allow us to pass?

The solution begins not only with schools and universities, but also Parents show children that they value academic excellence on popular culture, entertainment and celebrity. Here are some ideas for helping young people prepare for success:

• Science Mentor – A parent in one of my classes a few years ago, worked ice core samples taken in Antarctica. He came to school dressed in his parka, boots and hauling ice-coring equipment and slides to show the kids. They were mesmerized. I have kids who remember years later "the ice man." Showing kids what a real scientist has created a huge impression.

• Give children the time and tools for creative play – Parents fill today's schedule their children with various activities. As a result, children have less time for creative play. They miss on the discovery that comes from drawing, building with imagination. Take the time to writing, drawing and building something with your children. Give them construction toys, Lego and art supplies. For young children it is the process of creating that is important, not the product.

• Limit screen time – I have parents who restrict their children to watch TV on the weekend or have been rid of the TV entirely. Children can not themselves regulate TV watching or computer use. It is up to us as parents to help them.

• Encourage the challenging child – Some of the smartest children may be more challenging because them everything from their parents or teachers tell them question. While this can be frustrating, remember that it is a sign of your child is an independent thinker. Encouraging your child to try his or her own solutions, even if they fail, to build flexibility and problem solving skills.

• Model what you value – Children should see their parents create of art, music, dance, try a new recipe, making mistakes. Open yourself to a childlike sense of discovery and see if your child find the same joy.
